HEADLINES: Lisle, IL (6/29/10)—In just her second time contesting the event, Spalding freshman Caitlin Anson-representing Coach Funk's Mach Los Track Club-placed third in the 2000m steeplechase at the USATF Youth National Track & Field Championships hosted by Benedictine University. Anson would continue to lead for nearly the remainder of the five-lap contest that includes four un-moveable wooden barriers and one water jump. Although the pace was quick, Anson couldn't seem to shake FitzPatrick nor Pamperin. Anson would extend her lead over the water barrier, only to see it get sucked back up each time by the Thunderbird teammates. It was on the second to last water jump that Fitzpatrick (who boasted PR's of 5:06 and 2:19) finally overtook Anson, as Pamperin would soon follow. At the bell, Anson trailed for the first time, and with tiring legs, and third all but wrapped up, motivation to chase any harder was difficult for the inexperienced freshman to muster.

As
the gun sounded, Anson tucked into third behind race favorite Delaney
FitzPatrick (WI) and her Thunderbird Track Club teammate Kathryn
Pamperin, as five others trailed close behind. That would all change.
As the group approached the first barrier, Anson accelerated and
took the lead over FitzPatrick and Pamperin, and a gap immediately
began to open over the rest of the field.
Anson
finished in 8:03.86, with FitzPatrick winning in 7:44.60, and Pamperin
second in 7:52.87. The next closest finisher to Anson-Angel Farrell
of nearby Aurora, IL-was 21.62 seconds back.
Moments
after claiming third in the nation at the USATF Youth Championships
and being congratulated for her efforts, Anson's response; "Yeah,
but I could have won it, I led for so long, I should have won it."
With a taste of a national title within her reach, Anson will certainly
have motivation to build on for next year's championships.
