Miller Highlights Day One at IAAM Champs
Towson (5/12/10)Freshman
Molly Miller won her qualifying heat of the 800m dash with the fastest
time of the day in her new PR of 2:29.38 during the first day of
the IAAM Championships at Calvert Hall Boys School.
The 800m final
will be Saturday at 2:30pm and Miller will be joined by sophomore
Emily Chaundy, who ran a lifetime best of 2:31.5 to finish fifth
in her heat with the 9th best qualifying time. The thrid through
tenth qualifiers were only separated by 1.5 seconds.
Freshman
Caitlin Anson (2:28.41) ran the fastest time so far for a Spalding
girl by leading off the 4x800m relay, passing the baton to Elisa
Heacock with a big lead. Anson ran all along for much of the first
leg, and looked as though she could have run much faster had she
been pushed. Later she finished fifth in the first heat of the open
800m dash in 2:34.3, but did not advance to the final.
Heacock got
out really strong (70.52) and finished with her best time of 2:33.6
(a PR by 3 seconds). She handed off to fellow sophomore Carolyn
Zotti who finished in a personal best of 2:36.6, but when she passed
to senior Ashley Allen, the team had fallen back to fifth. Allen,
dealing with anemia, ran a valiant anchor in 2:43.7 to hang on for
sixth overall and one team point for Spalding.
The girl's 4x200m
relay team placed sixth overall in the final, as Dani Beard ran
a huge lead-off leg PR of 26.50. Michelle Boivin (29.58), Adrienne
Shoots (28.49), and Allie Kibby (28.90) combined to set a season
best time of 1:53.5, just 1.8 seconds off the school record of 1:51.67
set last year.
Senior Emily
Davis placed sixth in the shot put with a toss of 31 feet 4 inches
to give Spalding three team points after day one. But on Saturday
big points could come quickly for Spalding in the high jump, triple
jump, 1600m run, 800m run and the 4x400m relay, as the Cavaliers
are ranked very high in each of those events.
In the long
jump, Kibby placed 11th with a jump of 14 feet 4 inches, but unfortunately
her PR of 15 feet 8.75 inches would have placed her 3rd on Wednesday.
Freshman Kat Zotti jumped a PR of 13-5.50 inches.
The 4x100m relay
of Boivin (13.27), Kibby (13.15), K.Zotti (13.77) and senior Elaine
Healy (14.76) ran 54.95 but did not advance to Saturday's final.
Beard finished
third in her heat and 7th overall in the 400m dash trials in 61.7,
but missed the final qualifying spot by a tenth of a second.
In the 100m
hurdles, junior Courtney Doran finished 8th overall in a personal
best 18.70, but only six runners advanced to the finals. Classmate
Sam Ballard was on her way to a big PR before crashing hard into
the 8th hurdle, moving her from second in the race to third almost
immediately and killing her chance to advance. Junior Lauren Dominick
finished in a hand timed 19.5 which was a personal best.
Saturday's finals
get underway with the field events at 9:30am; discus (Davis), triple
jump (Boivin, Kelsey Haworth and Catherine Keniston) and the high
jump (Doran).
The girls 1600m
run (Chaundy, Anson, and Heacock) run at 1:15pm, and the 4x400m
relay (Megan Laskey, Shoots, Healy and Beard) is slated to start
at 3:25pm.

Two Records Fall for Spalding at 31st
Bob Golliday Invitational
Ferndale
(5/5/10)Sophomore Allie Kibby not only set a personal
best, she obliterated the previous school record in the long jump,
soaring 15 feet 8.75 inches to smash S. Sullivan's 1999 mark of
14 feet 6 inches. Kibby placed 5th in the event and helped the team
score an impressive 58 points at North County high school in the
31st annual Bob Golliday Invitational hosted by Old Mill.
Had the meet
been scored, Chesapeake would have won the meet, followed by Old
Mill, and Severna Park. Spalding would have placed fifth of the
seven teams competing, followed by North County and Glen Burnie.
Kibby also ran
the fastest split and her season best (13.32) on the second leg
of the 4th place 4x100m relay team (54.57), of junior Michelle Boivin,
freshman Kat Zotti, and senior Ashley Allen, which nearly achieved
the 2004 record of 53.8 seconds. Kibby's long jump moved her from
16th on the IAAM rankings to #5.
In the girl's
high jump, junior Courtney Doran placed third with her all-time
best of 5 feet 0 inches to tie with three others for the school
record. Doran is just in her first year in the event, and now ranks
#3 among IAAM competitors heading into the championship meet next
week. If she can clear 5-2 next week, she will own the record all
to herself.
Dani Beard placed
2nd in the 200m dash (27.52), while also taking 5th in the 100m
dash in 13.22 seconds despite a steady head-wind. The junior's solid
anchor leg of 62.29 seconds in the 4x400m relay (Megan Laskey, Adrienne
Shoots, and Elaine Healy) moved the team from sixth to fourth for
a team time of 4:23.66 (second best on the year). Laskey earlier
had placed fourth in the 400m dash in 61.8 seconds.
Molly Miller
took 3rd in the 800m dash, becoming the first runner under Coach
Funk's leadership to run under 2:30, finishing in 2:29.55. That
time moves the freshman from #14 on the IAAM depth chart to #3,
and sets up the indoor runner-up for a possible shot at the outdoor
title next week.
The girl's shot
putters had a big day. Senior Emily Davis improved on her season
best by tossing 32 feet 5 inches for fourth place, while sophomore
Kelsey Haworth had a huge PR of 31 feet 4.50 inches, bettering her
previous best by two feet 1.50 inches for fifth place.
Boivin placed
fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 30 feet 6 inches, for her
third best effort all-time. She also ran a personal best (28.55)
on the second leg of the fourth place 4x200m relay (1:55.29) joining
Healy (29.21), Zotti (29.00) and Shoots (28.34)
The IAAM Championships
get under way next week on Wednesday May 12th at 2pm at Calvert
Hall and conclude on Saturday May 15th at 9:30am at Calvert Hall.
Before yesterday's meet, Spalding was only showing 15 points at
the championship meet based on the league ranked order list. Now
the girls are showing 49 points, and seem to be peaking when it
counts the most.
League Meet
vs. Bryn Mawr,
Emily Chaundy
won the 1600m run easily for the Cavaliers, bettering St. Mary's
Colleen Randolph for the win in 5:46. Also winning an event for
Spalding was Lauren Dise in the 300m hurdles (58.8), who also placed
second in the 100m hurdles (21.0) running the event for the first
time.
A number of
girls took second or third place, including Tyler Ruff (3200), and
Bethany Hayden (triple jump) both second, and third placers Kristen
Kibby (100m), Caroline Zotti (1600), Hannah Hershey (400m), and
Allie Van Scoyoc (3200).

Boivin's Triple Jump win paces
Spalding Girls at McDonogh
Owings Mill (4/28/10)On a blustery and chilly day,
Junior Michelle Boivin set three personal records, including an
IAAM automatic qualifying mark of 31 feet 11 inches to win the triple
jump at a quad meet with Maryvale Prep and Saint Mary's hosted by
the McDonogh School.
Boivin crushed
her previous school record of 30 feet 8 inches, moving to 4th best
in the IAAM rankings, and ran a personal best 28.7 on the second
leg of the winning 4x200m relay. Finally, she lead-off the 3rd place
4x100m relay with a season best 13.37 seconds. Boivin was the only
lady Cavalier to win an event, in a meet where Spalding hammered
Saint Mary's 86-to-51, but fell to Maryvale Prep 91-to-55, and host
McDonogh, 106-to-39.
Sophomore Kelsey
Haworth set two personal bests, finishing third overall in the triple
jump with a distance of 29 feet 9 inches, smashing her previous
best of 28 feet 1.25 inches. In the shot put, Haworth threw 29 feet
3 inches to PR by five inches.
Junior Sam Ballard
placed 4th overall in the 100m hurdles with an automatic IAAM qualifying
mark of 18.5 seconds, bettering her best by .5 seconds.
Dani Beard placed
second in the 400m dash in 64.2, while senior Elaine Healy placed
third overall with her PR of 66.0. Senior Megan Laskey was fifth
in 66.7. Sophomore Elisa Heacock took third in the 1600m run (5:49.8),
junior Courtney Doran was second in the high jump (4-10), sophomore
Cara McNellis placed 4th in the 3200m run (13:27.6), while freshmen
Courtney Vecheck (14:03.3) and Tyler Ruff (15:00.8) both set PR's
to take 5th and 6th overall.
Despite falling
to Maryvale Prep, Spalding did hold a 31-20 lead after 7 events,
and a 32-28 point lead after 8 events. But Maryvale Prep's strong
performances in the pole vault, long jump, shot put, discus, 200m
dash, 300m hurdles and 800m dash did in the Cavaliers.
Defending IAAM
champions, McDonogh, beat all three schools, but Spalding bettered
them in four events; 1600m, 3200m, high jump, and the triple jump.
Against St. Mary's, Spalding beat the Saints in 13 of the 18 contested
events.
Next up for
the Cavaliers will be a split squad endeavor; with the "A" squad
competing at the Bob Golliday Classic hosted by Old Mill, but conducted
at North County high school due to stadium construction at Old Mill;
and a dual meet with Bryn Mawr at Curley for the remainder of the
Spalding team.

Fast time at Penn Relays for girls
4x400m
Philadelphia
(4/22/10)The Spalding girl's 4x400m relay team improved
their season best by nine seconds with a clocking of 4:16.43 for
11th place in their heat on Thursday afternoon at the 116th running
of the Penn Relays; held annually at the University of Pennsylvania's
Franklin Field.
All four girls
set relay personal best times, as senior Adrienne Shoots led off
in 64.1, followed by classmates Ashley Allen (65.2), Elaine Healy
(65.6), and junior Dani Beard, who anchored in 61.3, her second
sub-62 performance in less than a week.
The current
school record of 4:12.7 was set in 1999 by A. Fox, K. Pember, S.
Sullivan and Kelly Zuknick, but that record may be in serious jeopardy
by season's end.
Next up for
the Spalding girl's track & field team is an extremely challenging
quad meet hosted by McDonogh with Maryvale Prep and Saint Mary's.
Spalding will score against all three teams this coming Wednesday
April 28th.
McDonogh and
Maryvale Prep finished 1-2 at the indoor championships and are the
top two teams this outdoor season. For the first time this season,
the Spalding girls will run a full "A" squad in every event and
look to achieve major improvements from everyone.

4x8 win and huge PRs highlight Urbana Hawk Invite
Ijamsville,
MD (4/17/10)In the first scoring event of the day, freshman
Catilin Anson took the lead in the 4x800m relay after lap one and
the Spalding girls never trailed again; winning in a team best 10:36.05.
On a cool and windy day, the Cavaliers tallied 21 team points for
a 11th place finish in the Urbana Invitational hosted by Urbana
high school.
Anson recorded
her PR of 2:33.45 on the lead-off leg, followed by fellow freshman
Molly Miller (2:37.7), sophomore Caroline Zotti (2:43.2), and senior
Ashley Allen (2:41.5).
In the 400m
dash, senior Megan Laskey had perhaps the most impressive performance
of the day, winning her heat in 61.98 seconds; a PR by seven seconds!
Junior Dani Beard won the next heat in 61.90 with her all-time best,
as the duo went fifth and sixth overall respectively. Sophomore
Hannah Hershey followed Laskey in a PR of 66.27 to take 16th overall.
Laskey and Beard's times were automatic IAAM qualifiers and currently
rank 3rd and 4th in the league.
Miller followed
her 4x800m relay team win with a sixth place finish in the open
800m dash, running 2:36.4, followed by Anson in 9th (2:41.84) and
Allen 11th (2:44.35).
The 4x100m relay
team of Kristen Kibby (Sr), Kat Zotti (Fr), Toni Jablonski (Jr)
and Michelle Boivin (Jr) received fifth place ribbons with a time
of 58.11.
Sophomore Cara
McNellis placed 16th overall in the 3200m run running a PR of 13:15.63,
a personal best by over one minute and 17 seconds. All three 3200-meter
runners entered set PR's, with freshman Tyler Ruff running 15:01.86,
and senior Catherine Morandin finishing in 16:03.21.
In the field
events, junior Courtney Doran led the way for Spalding with a second
place high jump performance of 4 feet 8 inches. Michelle Boivin
placed sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 30 feet 3.25 inches,
as both Doran and Boivin earned top-six awards.
Senior Emily
Davis placed 7th in the shot put (29-5) and 14th in the discus with
a PR of 79 feet 4 inches. Allie Kibby jumped 13 feet 10.75 inches
along with Beard to tie for 16th place in the long jump, while Boivin
set her best of 13 feet 5 inches; all of which were IAAM qualifiers.
Kelsey Haworth
set her personal best in the triple jump with an IAAM qualifying
mark of 28 feet 1.25 inches. All told, 13 PR's were established
with four new IAAM qualifying performances.
Next up for
the Spalding Girls Track & Field team will be the world famous Penn
Relay's next Thursday at the University of Pennsylvania's Franklin
Field. Seniors Adrienne Shoots, Ashley Allen, and Elaine Healy will
join junior Dani Beard to comprise the 4x400m relay which races
at 3:05pm.

Heacock and Distance Crew steal the show
at Pikesville Classic
Pikesville (4/10/10)Sophomore Elisa Heacock was the
sole medalist for Spalding in a highly competitive meet hosted by
Pikesville high school on a mild but breezy day. Heacock placed
sixth overall in the freshman/sophomore 1600m run with a huge personal
best (PR) of 5:48.48. That time is an IAAM B-standard qualifier.
Later in the
day, Heacock ran a season best 13:07.95 in the 3200m run, followed
by freshman Caitlin Anson's PR of 13:18.83. Earlier in the over
10-hour invitational, Anson crushed her 1600m PR by four seconds,
running 5:42.45 in the seeded 1600m run. Anson would have finished
third overall in the freshman/sophomore 1600m run, and was the fourth
best freshman of the day.
If the freshman/sophomore
1600m run was a cross country race, Spalding would have dominated,
as the lady Cavaliers placed five runners within the top 24-runners
of an over 80 girl field. Sophomore Caroline Zotti placed 17th with
her PR of 6:03.46, followed closely by freshman Caitlyn McGuinness'
PR of 6:07.65. Sophomore Cara McNellis, new to track & field, set
her PR of 6:13.93 for 23rd, and freshman Courtney Vecheck won her
heat in a PR of 6:14.27 for 24th place overall. Freshmen Erin Doley
and Laura Doley both ran PR's of 7:13.43 and 7:31.27 respectively.
The next highest
Spalding finish of the day was the eighth place 4x800m relay team
of Ashley Allen, Emily Chaundy, Dani Beard, and Molly Miller, who
finished with a season best time of 10:38.99.
Allen led off
with a PR of 2:36.4 with a very gutsy performance. After not getting
a very good start, Allen burst around the pack, and sprinted back
into the front of the race. With one lap to go of the two lap race,
Allen was now in second place. At 600m into the race, the senior
was on pace to run 2:25.4, but her early heroics to get back into
the race caught up with her, and she faded to 5th. Chaundy (2:38.9),
Beard and Miller went back and forth from 5th to 8th the remainder
of the race.
In the open
800m dash, Chaundy placed 22nd overall of 60 competitors, with a
huge PR of 2:33.89. Since indoor track began in December, Chaundy
had been stuck at 2:37 for her personal best, and had a previous
outdoor best of only 2:49; until Saturday. Opening up her first
lap in 74.65, the sophomore was determined not to give in, and came
back in 78.82 seconds to run an IAAM B-standard mark, and all but
assure a spot in the 800m dash at championships. The automatic mark
she will now look to obtain is 2:28.0.
The mid-distance
and distance runners have now produced nine (9) IAAM qualifying
marks, but will all still need to improve drastically to secure
places in the championship meet on May 12 & 15th.
Allen joined
with Adrienne Shoots, Hannah Hershey and Dani Beard to finish 15th
overall in the 4x400m relay with a season best of 4:26.41. Allen
led off in 65.2, while Beard anchored in a PR of 64.3.
Earlier in the
day, Beard finished 27th of 69 runners in the 200m dash in 27.83,
while Shoots and Hershey both set personal bests in the open 400m
dash, with Shoots finishing 22nd of 50 competitors in 65.97, followed
by Hershey in 68.53.
Lauren Dominick
ran 56.99 in the 300m hurdles to set her best time in just the second
time she has run the event.
In the field
events, junior Courtney Doran tied for 9th overall in the high jump
with a leap of 4 feet 8 inches.
This week the
Spalding Girls Track & Field team will be at Curley High School
on Wednesday 4/14 in a dual meet with Notre Dame Prep, and will
compete in the Urbana Invitational at Urbana high school on Saturday,
April 17th.

Beard leads Spalding girls to first win of the
year
Towson (4/7/10)Junior Dani Beard finished second in
three events; all with automatic qualifying marks; and anchored
the winning 4x200m relay team to help the Spalding girls tie John
Carroll, 71-to-71, and better Mercy, 74-to-67, at an IAAM league
meet hosted by Calvert Hall.
Beard teamed
with senior Ashley Allen, freshman Adri MnKande and junior Lauren
Dominick to win the 4x200m relay, and then Allen teamed with senior
Elaine Healy, and freshmen Caitlin Anson and Caitlyn McGuinness
to win the 4x400m relay.
Senior Emily
Davis won both the shot put (30-2) and the discus (74-10), as sophomore
Kelsey Haworth (28-9) finished second overall to Davis in the shot
for the second consecutive week.
Junior Courtney
Doran finished second in the high jump (4-8) with an automatic qualifying
mark, and ran a PR of 19.6 in the 100m hurdles despite a sore knee
that kept her out of the first meet last week.
Beard ran 12.9
in the 100m dash, 27.3 in the 200m dash, leapt 14-2.5 in the long
jump, and anchored the 4x200 relay in 28.1 to score 11.5 team points.
Last week the
girls had 16 IAAM qualifying performances. Yesterday the team produced
14, with 8 new marks and two updated marks from previous qualifiers.
The Cavaliers
get right back on the track this Saturday at the Pikesville Classic
at Pikesville high school beginning at 9:00am.

Not Quite Enough for Spalding Girls in Outdoor
Opener
Baltimore 3/31/10 Freshman Caitlin Anson anchored
the winning 4x800-meter relay team with a personal best 2:34.9,
then won the 3200m run in 13:39.0 to lead Spalding in their first
outdoor meet of the 2010 season.
Spalding, not
running a full squad or its best runners in every event, finished
second to Seton Keough; 57-to-80, and second to Mt. DeSales; 63-to-74
in double dual scoring. St. Mary's was also in attendance but scores
were not kept against the Saints.
Anson, who
bettered her 800m best by six-seconds, was joined by junior Dani
Beard (2:38.7), freshman Cailtyn McGuinness (2:43.6) and senior
Ashley Allen (2:46.5) to combine for 10:43.7 for the win. Other
overall winners for the Cavaliers were freshman Molly Miller who
won the 800m dash in 2:38.6 and senior Emily Davis, who won the
shot put with an automatic qualifying toss of 30 feet 3 inches.
Sophomore Emily
Chaundy ran a huge PR of 5:41.5 in the 1600m run, finishing second
by a mere .3 tenths of a second to St. Mary's senior Colleen Randolph;
the 2009 IAAM outdoor runner-up for 1600m and the B-Conference runner-up
for cross country this past fall.
Junior Michelle
Boivin established the new school record in the triple jump, leaping
a PR of 30 feet 3 inches for second place. Boivin bettered Sara
Backof's 2009 mark of 29 feet 10 inches. Boivin now owns both indoor
and outdoor records. Sophomore Kelsey Haworth placed second in the
shot put with an automatic qualifying throw of 28 feet 9 inches,
and the 4x400m relay team of Megan Laskey (SR), Elaine Healy (SR),
Chaundy, and Allen took second in 4:37.9.
Third place
finishers for Spalding included freshman Courtney Vecheck in the
3200m run (14:26.0), Davis in the discus (72-10), sophomore Caroline
Zotti in the 800m dash (2:42.6), Beard in the 400m dash (66.5),
and Miller in the 1600m run (6:02.5).
Advancement
to the IAAM championships comes via automatic (A standards) and
provisional (B standards) marks in each event. The top 24 athletes
in each event that have achieved either an A or B standard qualify
for the championship meet.
Spalding achieved
16 qualifying standards yesterday. B standard qualifiers were: Sam
Ballard and Lauren Dominick (100m hurdles), Emily Chaundy and Molly
Miller (1600), Dani Beard , Adrienne Shoots and Caitlyn McGuinness
(400m ), Miller and Caroline Zotti (800m), Shoots (200m), Emily
Feege (high jump), Kat Zotti (long jump), Michelle Boivin (triple
jump), and Emily Davis (discus).
The Spalding
girls track & field team gets back under way on Wednesday April
7th at Calvert Hall against Mercy and John Carroll.

Sophomore Wins Iron-Woman title
3/6/10 It has been said that loss of hair can come
from stress. Maybe happiness and hopefulness can lead to massive
hair growth. Just look at how much hair Coach Funk has grown in
just two days. After watching his team over the first two days of
practice during the seasonal IRON-WOMAN COMPETITION, Funk has seen
his team add talent to an already talented team.
Over
a cold, cloudy, rainy, and windy two days; Sophomore Allie Kibby
ran away with the in-team competition, which also serves as a testing
ground to place athletes in their respective event groups.
With
the lowest score determining the winner, Kibby tallied just 12 points
over five events, winning the 5-bounds (33-5) and shot put (20-8)
while placing second in the 50-meter dash (7.47), 200m dash (33.41),
and a sixth place finish for 800-meters (3:10.0).
Sophomore
Elisa Heacock, one of the top cross-country runners during the fall,
finished second with only 19-points, winning the final event (800m)
by two seconds over senior Megan Laskey. Heacock finished third
for 200m and 5-bounds, fifth for the 50m dash, and eighth for the
shot put.
Laskey
finished third with 31 points, winning the 50m dash (7.36), 200m
dash (32.93), placed second for 5-bounds (32-2), as well as 800m,
but a 25th place shot put toss sealed her overall Iron-Woman fate.
Sophomore Catherine Keniston placed fourth with 32 points and senior
Kristen Kibby rounded out the top five with 42 points.
Among
the top 10 finishers, five of those were sophomores. With much of
the indoor team scorers returning-many freshmen or sophomores- the
team certainly looks to be building for huge success.
The
team will start the season on Wednesday March 31st with an IAAM
league meet at Curley H.S. against Mt. DeSales, Seton Keough and
St. Mary's.

Chaundy's 1k runner-up debut
leads Spalding Girls
RockvilleSophomore Emily Chaundy has been improving
all-season long. In her second event of the day and subbing in for
freshman Caitlin Anson, she attempted the oft-run 1000-meter dash,
and came away with a great performance at the Private School Invitational
hosted by Georgetown Prep School.
Chaundy, who was not overly confident about how to run the race,
moved up steadily throughout, finishing in 3:25.51 for a new school
record. Had she kept going, her current pace would have set her
up to run the 1600-meter equivalent of a 5:32.7, which would have
been #2 all-time in school history.
Earlier, Chaundy led off the third place 4x800m relay team with
an opening split of 2:37.88, just off her relay personal best set
two weeks ago of 2:37.54. Senior Elaine Healy (2:48.54), sophomore
Ally Logan (2:45.26) and freshman Kelly Harner (2:50.54) combined
with Chaundy for a time of 11:02.57. Harner and Logan set personal
bests, with Harner outkicking Georgetown Day for third place.
Team points were kept with awards to the top three teams, and medals
were awarded to top three event finishers. Chaundy's 9.5 points
led Spalding to a sixth place finish with 39 points, despite missing
several key team-members.
Also earning a medal was third place sophomore Kelsey Haworth, who
threw a personal best 28 feet 10 inches in the shot put. Haworth
improved on her fifth place ranking in school history by four inches.
Senior Ashley Allen just missed her PR in the 500m dash of 1:26.5,
placing fifth with a time of 1:26.93, followed closely by heat winner
and seventh place freshman Caitlyn McGuinness (1:29.00).
Allen
teamed with Dani Beard (64.16), Healy (68.2) and McGuinness (69.31),
to anchor the 4x400m relay in 66.24 seconds for fourth place in
4:28.35. That time is the third fastest in school history, and the
second fastest team time this season.
Junior Courtney Doran placed fourth in the high jump, equaling her
personal best of 4 feet 10 inches, just missing a new best at 5-feet
even. Sophomore Emily Feege cleared 4 feet 2 inches for fifth place
and her first clearance in a meet.
Beard who set her personal best in the 4x400m relay also placed
fifth in the long jump, just off her all-time best with a leap of
14 feet 3.75 inches.
All told, 17 personal records were established despite the two week
layoff from training due to the two severe snow storms to hit our
region. Complete results can be found at www.mocorunning.com
Next up will be the Kentucky High School Invitational in Lexington
Kentucky on Feb. 20th where a few of the girls will try to qualify
for elite invites in late February and mid-March.

Snow
couldn't prevent great day by
Spalding Girls
Rockville (1/30/10)Eight personal bests, one school
record, a third place performance and unexpected snow-fall amounts
best describe Spalding's Saturday at the Last Track to Philly Invitational
at Georgetown Prep's Landon Center.
With snow piling up outside at a much greater rate than forecast,
Emily Davis and the rest of the Spalding girls couldn't care less.
An undistracted Davis finished 3rd in the Shot Put with a toss of
32 feet 4.50 inches. Four times the senior threw over 30-feet; an
accomplishment she had never done before until she did it two weeks
ago at the IAAM Championships.
Freshman Courtney Vecheck led the Spalding Track youth movement
with the biggest improvement of the meet, lowering her time in the
1600-meter run by 1 minute and 30 seconds, running 6:25.2 for the
fourth best time this year by a Spalding girl.
Fellow classmate Caitlin Anson easily won her section of the mile
run by dropping her time by 11 seconds and moved into 4th all-time,
running 5:46.15 placing ninth overall in the B section. It was Anson's
first win of her young running career.
Freshman Adri MnKande improved her mark in the long jump by over
1 foot, moving into 2nd all-time in school history with a leap of
13 feet 10.25 inches; also placing ninth overall. MnKande had tried
earlier in the season to qualify for the IAAM championships by obtaining
the qualifying mark of 13 feet 0 inches, but was unsuccessful. Saturday
the freshman achieved well over that mark four times!
Junior Michelle Boivin improved upon her own school record in the
triple jump, by hop, step and jumping 10 inches further with a mark
of 28 feet 10 inches.
And finally, junior Dani Beard anchored the 4x400 relay team with
the season's best split with a time of 64.49 seconds. Fellow seniors
Elaine Healy (68.93) and Kelly Roden (69.14) also set personal bests.
Unfortunately it was not all good news. Freshman Caitlyn McGuinness
was well on her way to running one of the fastest 400m legs of the
year in her indoor track debut. McGuinness had been sidelined due
to a stress fracture suffered during the cross country season.
Finally able to run, she led off the Sprint Medley Relay and 375-meters
into her 400m leg she caught the shoe of the second place runner
in front and went down hard, suffering scrapes and bruises as well
as losing the baton across the track; virtually ending a chance
for team success in the race. Her 32 second opening lap had her
on pace to run around 66-67 seconds, instead, she handed off at
76.34 seconds.
The team will be back in action at Georgetown Prep next week for
the Private Schools Invitational and hope for much better weather;
although it didn't really seem to matter.

Freshman leads huge turnaround
for Spalding at IAAM CHAMPIONSHIPS
LandoverFreshman Molly Miller scored a team high 10.75
points to lead the Spalding girls track & field team to 48 team
points and a fourth place finish at the 2010 IAAM Championships
at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Center.
Miller
finished second in the 800m dash in a school record time of 2-minutes
33.23 seconds, equaling Sam Dennis' record earlier this season.
Miller used a furious kick over the final 200-meters to grab the
silver medal. The freshman also anchored the 4x800m relay team of
senior Ashley Allen, sophomore Emily Chaundy, and fellow freshman
Caitlin Anson to a fourth place finish of 10:32.50; good for third
all-time in school history.
Miller finished her day joining the third place 4x400m relay of
seniors Adrienne Shoots (65.67), Allen and sophomore Kelsey Bonner
(67.62). Their time of 4:27.36 ranks #2 all-time, just 2.02 seconds
off the mark established in 1999.
Also winning a silver medal and setting a new school record was
senior Emily Davis, who crushed Keri Lounge's shot put mark of 31
feet 7 inches set in 1999 with her throw of 33 feet 8.75 inches.
Davis and Miller combined to score 39.1% of the team's 48 points,
however, every girl that competed scored at least .75 points.
Allen not only led off the third place 4x400 relay with a PR split
of 64.53 seconds, and the 4x800 relay with another PR of 2:35.46,
she also finished fifth in the 500m dash (1:26.50) with another
PR and the #3 time in school history.
Junior Dani Beard scored 4.75 points, finishing seventh in the 55m
dash (7.79), eighth in the 300m dash (45.10), eighth in the long
jump (14-5.25), while also anchoring the sixth place 4x200m relay
in a new PR of 27.41 seconds with a team time of 1:56.88; third
all-time.
Junior Courtney Doran established another personal best in the high
jump (4 feet 10 inches), her third in the last three meets, with
the third best Spading leap all-time indoors. Her PR was good enough
for fifth place even though it was the third best jump. Doran finished
fifth based on total misses throughout the competition.
Sophomore
Kelsey Haworth finished fifth in the shot put with a PR of 28 feet
6 inches, good for fifth all-time.
The Cavaliers fourth place finish with 48 points was quite an improvement
from the 2009 team that scored just six points at last year's championship
meet. On paper, the Spalding girls were only slated to score 31
points, but managed +17 points better when in counted.
Only one team (2nd place Maryvale Prep; +27pts) scored more positive
points than Spalding, followed by Notre Dame Prep (+11.5) and McDonogh
(+8.5); whereas teams like Mt. DeSales (-12), John Carroll (-5.5)
and Bryn Mawr (-4.5) scored less than what they were ranked.
There was also a few events contested as "open" or "JV" races, and
the Spalding girls also did very well. Leading the way was junior
Sam Ballard and sophomore Caroline Zotti.
Ballard won the 55m hurdles in 10.72 seconds, which is #2 in school
history, just .08 seconds behind Sarah Backof's school record. Ballard's
time would have finished ninth in the varsity field.
Zotti was also victorious, taking the 800m dash in a huge PR of
2:39.68, a personal best by 9.89 seconds. That time would have finished
tenth in the varsity championships. Fellow sophomore Ally Logan,
coming off an injury and running in her first meet of the year,
finish third in 2:46.63 despite leading for most of the race before
she ran out of gas.
Freshman Kelly Harner placed second in the 500m dash, moving her
best time down by 3.6 seconds to 1:36.39. Complete results from
the meet can be found at www.runningmaryland.com
The
girls track team gets back underway on Saturday January 30th at
Georgetown Prep's Last Track to Philly Invitational beginning at
9am.
The
Spalding girls indoor track team was busy during the holiday break,
competing in three meets since December 18th. A recap of each meet
can be read below. Indoor records have been updated, as well as
our travel schedule.
Doran Leads Spalding Girls at PG Invite
LandoverJunior Courtney Doran soared over 4 feet 8 inches
in the high jump to claim fifth place and establish a new Personal
Record (PR) as well as the fourth best leap in school history at
the inaugural Prince George's New Year's Classic at the PG Sports
and Learning Center on January 2nd.
Doran had no misses after her 4-8 clearance and was tied for first
place as she attempted 4 feet 10 inches. However, she was unable
to clear the height despite three near makes. The competition was
won by Kiersten LaRoche of Bishop McNamara with a leap of 5 feet
2 inches.
The top six finishers in each event received awards, and Doran was
the only Spalding athlete to claim a top finish in the large invitational.
Sophomore Kelsey Bonner placed 11th with a jump of 4 feet 2 inches.
Senior Emily Davis established her PR in the shot put, throwing
29 feet 10 inches for 8th place overall. Sophomore Kelsey Haworth
placed 15th with a 26 feet 7 inch toss.
In the girls 800m dash, three of the four participants set PR's
as senior Sam Dennis placed 11th overall with a time of 2:35.75,
just off her best of 2:33.23. Just behind in 12th place was freshman
Molly Miller's PR of 2:36.10, followed in 16th and 17th by senior
Ashley Allen (2:36.74) and sophomore Emily Chaundy (2:37.40).
For Allen it was the first time she had raced 800 meters, and in
her first try qualified for the IAAM Championships by bettering
the qualifying standard of 2:42.0. Chaundy also advanced to championships
by moving her PR down by a whopping eight seconds! Those four will
comprise the 4x800m relay at the championship meet and attempt to
break the school record of 10:22.17 set in 1999. The girls combined
PR's would equal 10:23.47.
Also setting personal best's for Spalding were freshman Jessica
Nahmias in the 55m hurdles with a time of 11.24 seconds. Senior
Elaine Healy lowered her PR by four seconds, but narrowly missed
the qualifying standard in the 500m dash of 1:32.0, running 1:32.96.
Also setting a PR but just missing a qualifying mark was Bonner,
who ran 47.69 in the 300m dash, missing the standard by .69 seconds.
Bonner
Qualifies for IAAM Champs
at fabled New York Armory
Manhattan, NYSophomore Kelsey Bonner equaled the IAAM
long jump standard of 13 feet 0 inches at the Marine Corps Classic
at the New York Armory on December 28th to advance to the championship
meet on January 15th.
Bonner's jump was the fifth best in school history; not bad for
the first time she had tried the event. She also set her PR in the
200m; twice running sub-30 seconds on the 4x200m relay (29.96) and
the Sprint Medley Relay (29.95). In her fourth event of the day,
Bonner had cleared a PR of 4-6 inches in practice jumps, but coming
straight from the long jump pit to compete in the high jump, was
unable to duplicate her warm-up clearance at the opening height
of 4-6.
Junior Courtney Doran cleared her best height in the high jump (4-6)
inches, while freshman Adri MnKande also established a new mark
of 12 feet 8 inches in the long jump. Senior Emily Davis has improved
in each meet in the shot put, setting her new PR of 29 feet 7.75
inches. Sophomore Kelsey Haworth went 25 feet 7 inches in the triple
jump to set her all-time best.

Personal Records Established
at IAAM Meet #2
LandoverFreshman Molly Miller placed fourth overall
in the 800m dash, qualified for the IAAM championships, and established
the third fastest time in school history; all in her first meet
of the year.
Miller's
time of 2:36.65 was well below the 2:42.0 qualifying standard. She
came back to join Ashley Allen, Sam Dennis and Adrienne Shoots to
place 2nd in the 4x400m relay in 4:29.44 which was the number two
performance in school history. Miller scored 7 team points to help
Spalding finish fourth overall for the second straight meet; this
time compiling 37.5 points.
Junior Dani Beard established the school record in the 55m dash
with her time of 7.77 seconds, tying for 6th overall. She came back

inch effort. Sophomore Kelsey Haworth was not far behind in fifth
place with her all-time best of 27 feet 3.5 inches.

set a personal best in the 1600 (5:57.35) which was good enough
for 9th place overall.

Dennis
leads new era of Spalding Track
LandoverSamantha Dennis scored 20 team points to lead
the Spalding Girls Track & Field team to a fourth place finish in
the first 12 team IAAM League meet of the 2009-10 season at the
Prince George's Sports and Learning Center.
Dennis
won the 800-meter dash in 2:33.23, and evened the score with Bryn
Mawr's Melissa Hexter (2:33.90). Dennis broke her previous school
record of 2:35 with the win. Earlier she had finished second in
the 1600-meter run to Hexter (5:38.25), setting a personal best
(5:39.89) and established the #2 all-time Spalding performance.The
senior closed out her day as the third leg of the second place 4x400m
relay which also posted a #2 performance.
Eight
girls combined to score 44-team points, trailing third place Seton
Keough (50) by just six-points. McDonogh won the meet with 186.5
points, followed by runner-up Maryvale Prep with 70.5 points.
Also
setting school records for the Cavaliers were Senior Adrienne Shoots
and Junior Danielle Beard. Shoots established the new 500m mark
by placing fifth overall in 1:28.89 and ran the fastest 4x400m relay
leg by anchoring the second place team in 66.22 seconds.
Beard
set the new 55m dash record by running 7.89 seconds for 7th place
overall, while also posting the second fastest time in school history
in the 300m dash (45.12) with her 5th place finish. Beard was a
busy girl, running two other events, the 4x200m relay (7th) and
the second place 4x400m relay.
Senior
Emily Davis placed third in the Shot Put with a toss of 29-3.75
inches, just .5 inches behind her personal best (#2 all-time).
The
first meet of the year provided the opportunity for a J.V. meet
to run in conjunction with the varsity meet, and Spalding took advantage.
The Cavalier girls placed third overall with 69 points behind winner
McDonogh (105) and runner-up Maryvale Prep (78).
Senior
Ashley Allen led the way with her victory in the 500m dash in 1:30.76
over classmate Megan Laskey (1:32.01). Allen's winning time is the
second fastest in school history. Later, Allen teamed with Laskey,
senior Kelly Roden and freshman Kelly Harner to win the 4x400m relay
in a time that would have finished sixth overall in the varsity
meet.
Freshman
Adri MnKande and Jessica Nahmias scored six-points each in their
first track & field meet experience. MnKande placed fourth in the
triple jump and eighth in the 55m dash, while Nahmias placed fifth
in the 55m hurdles and helped the 4x200m relay to a second place
finish.
The
Spalding Girls Track & Field team gets under way again in two weeks
in the second IAAM League meet at the Prince George's Sports and
Learning Center at 3:45pm.
2009-10 Iron-woman
Title Goes To Dennis
The 2009-10
Girls Indoor Track & Field season has begun, and Sam Dennis got
things started for Spalding by winning the Iron-Woman Championship.
New Spalding
head coach Brian Funk has installed a three-day testing system at
the beginning of each season which challenges the Spalding girls
track team over 6 events (55m dash, 5 bounds, Standing Long Jump,
Shot Put Toss, 200m dash, and 800m dash), in an effort to properly
place each athlete in their appropriate discipline (sprints, jumps,
throws or distance).
The winner
of each event is awarded one point, second place earns two points,
etc. with the lowest score over six events being named the Iron-Woman
of Spalding T&F. That title went to Dennis, who barely nipped fellow
senior Caitlin Yackus, 35-to-36.
Dennis won
the final event (800m dash) and finished second in the 55m dash
and Standing Long Jump, third in the 5 bounds, fourth in the 200m
dash, and 23rd in the Shot Put to total her winning 35 points.
After 3 events,
Yackus had complied just four points by winning the 5 bounds, and
standing long jump, and finishing 2nd in the 55m dash. Her third
place in the 200m dash and seventh place toss in the shot was not
enough however to overcome her 22nd place finish in the 800m dash.
Sophomore Kelsey
Bonner and Junior Adrienne Shoots tied for third with 44 points,
followed by sophomore Danielle Beard (58), senior Ashley Allen (67),
sophomore Kaye Phil bin (79), senior Bethany Hayden (85), sophomore
Kelsey Haworth (88), and senior Elaine Healy with 95 points to conclude
the top 10.
Over the next
several weeks the team will focus on developing base strength, form
and endurance while also beginning fundamental work in the specialty
events such as hurdles, jumps and throws.
The first official
meet for Spalding will be an IAAM League Meet on Friday December
4th at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Center at 4pm. The
full meet schedule can be viewed above.
